Patriots season ends on a bad note

Over the course of the season, the Patriots have been lacking a key component that would make them one of the best teams in the NFL. Some people may argue that it was the defense and others may believe that the offense hurt the team as whole. Bill Belichick spent a lot of money, draft picks, and time making his defense stronger. During the middle of the season, the Patriots traded away Richard Seymour, one of their star defensive ends to the Oakland Raiders. Prior to the 2009-2010 season, Bill Belichick also signed Leigh Bodden, Shawn Springs, and Fred Taylor hoping to make his team stronger on both sides of the football. Yesterday, the Patriots season was ended by the 9-7 Baltimore Ravens. They were trailing 24-0 after the first quarter. This game started similar to a playoff game New England played against the Colts a couple years before. But in that game the Patriots came back to win in dramatic fashion. But in yesterdays game, the Patriots lacked in effort, skill, and must importantly intensity. Going into the game, New England knew that the Ravens were a strong defensive team and wanted to put pressure on Tom Brady. The Ravens' second year runningback, Ray Rice ran for 1,339 yards this year. The Patriots' first priority should have been to stop the Ravens' strong running game. One of the reasons why the Patriots lost this game is that they could not stop the run. In the first play from scrimmage, Ray Rice ran for a 83 yard touchdown that gave the Ravens an early lead that they would not give away. From that play on, the Ravens had momentum that would keep them moving towards the AFC divisional round. The Patriots second priority should have been to put pressure on the Ravens secondary. Many people believed that the Patriots would be able throw the ball all over the Ravens defense. Unfortunately, the Patriots were not able to do this. The Patriots offensive line was not able to protect Tom Brady, who threw three interceptions, and resulted in a fumble that would eventually give the Ravens a 14-0 lead only four minutes into the contest. These multiple problems dug the Patriots into a deep whole that they were not able to climb out of. For many Patriots fans, this loss will leave a bad taste in your mouth for weeks to come.
