In the past couple of years the
Red Sox have not had as much success than the
Yankees have had. One reason for this happening is that the Yankees have made numerous free agent signings that have made them a better team. Last offseason the Yankees signed CC Sabathia to a seven year, 161 million dollar contract. With this deal complete, the Yankees have an ace for the next six years to come. It seems to me that the Red Sox have been more tentative in signing big name players to large contracts. In a way this is good but it is also hurting them each year. Last year the Red Sox had trouble with starting pitchers. Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield both were injured during the middle of the year. The Red Sox were lacking starting pitchers during that time. This offseason the Red Sox signed
John Lackey to a multi year contract. Many people see this signing as a good thing but also as a bad thing. Others believe that they should have spent money on signing or trading for bats such as Adrian Gonzalez or Matt Holiday. I believe that the Lackey signing was a good thing because good starting pitching can overcome big bats. Yesterday the Yankees made a good move that the Red Sox should model after. The Yankees traded Melky Cabrera for Javier Vazquez. The Yankees traded for a starting pitcher which they need and they gave up an outfielder which they have excess of. This is a move that the Red Sox should model after.
